Philosophizing in the Beer Garden

In the summer semester, the Professorship of Applied Ethics organizes the “Philosophizing in the Beer Garden” series. All interested parties are invited to discuss philosophical topics and positions in various beer gardens in the city: What is freedom? What is just and good? Texts and moderation will be prepared by students and the professorship. Registration or prior knowledge is not required.

The event series was developed as part of the PASSAUtonomy project , which won the university competition in 2024, an initiative of Wissenschaft im Dialog and the BMBF. Since then, the series has been continued at the professorship and integrated into courses.

2025: Platon meets Passau

from 6.30 pm on the following dates:

  • 20.5.2025: Ratskeller, Passau
  • 1.7.2025: Altes Bräuhaus, Passau
  • 15.7.2025: Das Oberhaus, Passau

Once again this summer, we would like to invite you to philosophize in the beer garden

On three evenings, we will read and discuss Plato's Politeia, a classic of philosophy on questions of justice.

Everyone who has the time and inclination to devote themselves to the big questions of philosophy in a relaxed atmosphere is welcome: What is true? What is just? What is good?

You can join in at any time. No previous knowledge or prior registration is required.

2024: Freedom and Immanuel Kant

As part of the PASSAUtonomy project, three evenings on freedom and Immanuel Kant's philosophy took place in 2024. Passau's urban society discussed questions with students such as: What does freedom mean today? How are self-determination and freedom connected? And what else does Kant have to say?
