Teaching

Our courses in all core areas of English linguistics and at the interfaces to cultural studies are part of the teacher training programmes with English as a teaching subject, as well as the Bachelor's and Master's programmes in European Studies, International Cultural and Business Studies, Communication in Digital Societies, Media and Communication, Language and Text Sciences, Semiotics of Texts and Culture, Geography: Culture, Environment and Tourism and Historical Studies.
Research

Through our research, we aim to contribute to a better understanding of language – as a system of signs, a means of communication, a cognitive medium, and a social institution. We explore the development and variation of the English language, its functions in social, (inter)cultural, and mediated contexts, as well as multimodal forms of meaning-making. Our research spans a broad spectrum – from sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, and discourse analysis to text linguistics, pragmatics, and comparative cultural studies. Thematically, we focus in particular on discourses in business, politics, and the media, on digital and intercultural communication, and on questions of (information) privacy from a cross-cultural perspective.
